You probably already know how important it is to stand out during an interview. You want to put your best foot forward and convince the company that you are the best person to hire. But you may be unsure exactly how to do it. Here are a few easy ways to stand out.

Do Your Homework

Take some time to research the company before your interview. Learn who their biggest clients are, their growth rate, and a bit of their history. Understanding where they came from and where they’re going will help you ask knowledgeable, relevant questions during the interview.

Arrive Early

Give yourself a few minutes to relax and compose yourself before your interview begins. Take a moment to do some deep breathing, review your notes, or give yourself a pep talk in the bathroom. Just remember that you’re “on stage” from the moment you enter the building. Be friendly and outgoing with everyone from the receptionist to the janitor.

Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Almost every interview will include a question about your strengths and weaknesses, so plan your answer in advance. Figure out how to tie your strengths to the specific position you’re interviewing for. And find a way to frame your weaknesses in a positive light, perhaps by discussing how you’re working to overcome them.

Provide Samples

It will be easier for your interviewer to picture you in the position if you show them what you have already accomplished. Build an online portfolio and provide a link or bring a physical copy of a previous project to your interview. Just make sure that your samples are relevant to the job you want, and be ready to explain how your work benefited your previous company.

Outline a 30-60-90-Day Plan

Tell the interviewer what you plan to do in the first 30, 60, and 90 days on the job. Explain how you will use your strengths to meet your goals and how your plans will help the department succeed. But be sure to stay humble. Don’t overpromise or come across as arrogant.

Follow Up

As the interview comes to a close, thank the interviewer for the opportunity and reiterate your interest in the job. Then send an email within 48 hours recapping what was discussed and inquiring about the next steps.
