Are you struggling to figure out exactly what career path is right for you? Maybe you know exactly where you want to be, but you have no idea how to get there. Or perhaps you haven’t quite decided yet what you want your future to look like. Either way, these three tips can help you chart a course that works well for you.
How Can You Carve Your Career Path the Way You Want?
Know Yourself
This is one of the hardest things for humans to achieve. But if you make the effort, it will make finding your career path so much easier. It all begins with two basic questions:
- How are you wired? Are you a people person or a deep thinker? Do you easily recognize patterns or do you have a lot of energy?
- What’s your fundamental personality? Try a personality assessment, such as the Myers-Briggs or the Enneagram. Personality isn’t static, but these tests can help you figure out which jobs are a more natural fit.
Think Like a Detective
You can learn a lot about what type of career you would love by using detective skills to piece through your life. Where do you spend your money? What do you write about in your journal? Are there any themes that you keep returning to in conversations with loved ones? Now, think about how the various clues fit together into something you could make money doing.
Find a Mission
There are a lot of unsolved problems in the world, and even more that are partially solved. Zoom way out to identify the problem you would solve if you had unlimited resources. By definition, missions are huge. You probably won’t entirely solve the problem you choose, even if you dedicate your entire life to it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make important strides towards it. If you can find a mission that also connects to your life’s themes and your overall personality, you’re well on your way to a meaningful lifelong career path.
