Effective Ways to Identify the Best Candidates

Choosing just the right candidates for your open roles can be challenging. But there are steps you can take to objectively assess the people you interview. Here are a few things to do with every candidate.

Skills Assessment

You will likely see a list of skills on each candidate’s resume. But that’s not enough on its own. You need to find out how strong their skills actually are. You can conduct formal skills assessments or simply discuss them during the interview. Either way, be sure to go into some detail. This will help you find strengths and weaknesses and determine how the person would fit into your existing team.

Experience Analysis

Make a list of the daily duties that each role entails. During the interview, discuss those duties and whether the candidate has done anything similar. Also ask about results and achievements. It’s important to assess whether the person has the background to add real value to your company.

Problem Solving

One of the best ways to test a candidate’s skills and knowledge is through a problem-solving test. Create a job-related scenario and ask the person how they would handle it. You can tailor this to specific roles or ask a more general question such as, “What would you do if a coworker was cutting corners to save time?” Just be sure to ask each candidate the same question in the same way. There isn’t necessarily a right answer. Instead, this gives you some insight into how the candidate thinks and solves problems.
