Congratulations on your new job! If you’re like most people, you probably have some butterflies as you anticipate your first day. Fortunately, just a few simple tips can help you make that all-important excellent first impression.
Check Your Wardrobe
The first day at a new job isn’t the time to go for a fashion statement. Instead, choose an outfit that is dress code appropriate, fits well, and is extremely comfortable. There will be enough going on that day without worrying about an itchy sweater or overly high heels.
Pack Your Patience
First day glitches are inevitable. All of your accesses and permissions might not be in place. You may need to watch some interminably long new hire videos. You might be overlooked for the group afternoon coffee order. Try to remember that it isn’t personal. Keep a positive attitude, ask for help when needed, and focus on settling in.
Arrive Early
Even if you’ve previously mapped your exact route, commuting delays always seem to happen at the worst possible times. In addition, you might need to stop by the restroom or fill out paperwork or take care of other things before officially starting your day. Leave yourself at least a 15-minute cushion so that you can start the day relaxed instead of frantic.
Say Yes
You may be bombarded with offers from your new teammates, which could cause you to feel overwhelmed. But try to say yes as much as possible, whether it’s joining coworkers for lunch or offering your assistance on a new project. You can always take some time to think about larger commitments, such as joining an affinity group or after-work sports league. But in your first few days, getting to know everyone and finding your place on the team can help set you up for future success.
The first day on a new job can be anxiety-producing. But it doesn’t have to throw you off. Just follow the tips above and it won’t take you long to settle into a routine.
