Working in customer service is never easy. Yes, you have the joy of helping someone solve a problem, guiding them when they’re lost, or, for hospitality workers, helping them bring to life an event they’ve been dreaming about for years. But more likely, you’re the person who gets the complaints, arguments, disappointment, and frustration. You’re the one who must keep your cool when all you want to do is return the energy being given to you.
Take a deep breath. It’s all going to be ok! Pirate Staffing is here to help you navigate the stresses of customer service jobs in the hospitality industry while avoiding burnout.
Recognizing Burnout: Know the Warning Signs
First, understand and recognize the symptoms of burnout. This will help you see the warning signs before it’s too late. Symptoms include:
- Slipping attention to detail
- Lack of empathy and poor attitude
- General pessimism
- Lack of focus
- Receiving more complaints than usual
- Feeling tired and lethargic all the time
These are all indications that a person has stopped caring about their job and trying to do their best; they’re just going through the motions to get through the day.
Strategies to Combat Burnout
Take a Break
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, extra stressed, or your emotions are getting out of hand, it’s time to step away. Going outside, getting some fresh air, or changing your responsibilities, even for just a few minutes, can help reset your emotions and cool down so that you can keep things under control. A short break can do wonders! If it’s been an especially busy shift, make sure you get a snack, as low blood sugar can throw your emotions out of control as well.
Hang On to the Little Victories
If you feel like you’re on your last nerve, try to remember the last compliment you received on your work. Did someone point out how beautiful the flower arrangements were? Did someone thank you for holding a door open or providing directions? Think back on the positive moments, knowing you did a good job and that your work helped to make the event a special day for all involved. Give yourself credit for all you’ve done!
Try Making Changes
If you feel overwhelmed by a task that feels really big, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. That way, you can accomplish little goals over time to complete the task. If you’re feeling bored by doing the same thing over and over, talk to your manager about a different assignment or different responsibilities, or see if there’s something new you can learn for the next event.
Practice Self-Care
Work-life balance isn’t just a buzzword; it’s something really important to practice to keep yourself mentally and physically well and energized. Be sure to get plenty of rest between events and to eat nutritious food before your shift starts. Take breaks for water and to rest during busy days. You and your team should cover for each other to make sure no one’s dehydrated or too hungry. If possible, use any paid time off you’re allotted to fully unplug from the hustle and bustle.
Customer service jobs are hectic and can be among the most stressful kinds of work. It makes sense that people would burn out from constantly being “on” and having to face people and their finicky whims!
