How to Find a Safe Job in 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic upended life as we know it in 2020, propelling personal safety to the top of many people’s minds. While workplace safety has always been an important topic, 2020 brought it home. If you’re in the market for a new job for the new year, here are some tips on finding one that’s safe.

How to Find a Safe Job in 2021

COVID-19 Precautions

The pandemic is still raging. Mass vaccination is on the horizon, but it will take some time to vaccinate the more than 330 million people in the United States, not to mention the over 7.6 billion people worldwide. Experts believe that in a best-case scenario, we could be largely back to normal by late summer or early fall, which means we’ll need to take precautions until then.

Make sure that any employer you are considering has strict guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. This should include face masks for both workers and customers, as well as handwashing or sanitizing stations, and measures to keep everyone at least six feet apart. Break rooms and other communal spaces should either be closed or set up in a way that prevents congregating. Don’t be afraid to ask about these topics during your interview, as a good company will be glad you’re concerned about safety.

OSHA Requirements

Of course, COVID-19 is not the only potential danger in light industrial workplaces. OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) sets out specific requirements for different types of employers. You’ll want to be sure that the company you are considering follows these guidelines, which may include the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), training and certification requirements for specific machinery, and even clothing guidelines to reduce the risk for injury.

Health and Wellness Plans

Nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, it would be irresponsible for any company not to have written health and wellness plans. From paid time off for sick or injured workers to programs to address workplace stress, finding out what the employer offers can tell you a lot about how seriously they take safety.

Work With a Staffing Agency

Of course, it can be tough to do all this research yourself. When you work with a trusted staffing agency, you can be sure that the employers on the agency’s list are well-vetted and committed to safety protocols. You’ll also get advice and assistance throughout the process of landing the job of your dreams. And best of all, these services are free for job seekers!
