Why 3rd Shift Might Be The Best Option For You

If you’re in the market for a new job, third shift probably isn’t the first option to spring to mind. Also known as the overnight or graveyard shift, this shift typically runs from 11pm to 7am or midnight to 8am. If you’re the type of person who can adjust your sleep schedule, this often-overlooked shift actually carries a lot of benefits that you may not have considered.

Here are just a few reasons to consider working overnights.

Family and Personal Time

Since much of daily life runs on a daytime schedule, it can be tough to find time to get a haircut or enjoy your kid’s afternoon events if you’re working traditional hours. Working overnight is a great way to make more time for the things that happen during the day, provided you’re able to easily adapt your sleeping hours.

Better Pay

Third shift is typically far less popular than first or second shift, which means employers often have to entice workers to fill that shift. A common incentive is a pay differential of as much as $3 an hour. Who doesn’t want to do exactly the same work for $3 extra per hour? You may even get promoted faster, as there is usually less competition on the overnight shift.

Quieter Worksite

Though there are always exceptions, third shift tends to be the quietest. Few, if any, customers will show up in the middle of the night. Upper management is typically fast asleep, and meetings are rare to nonexistent. It can even be easier to make friends with your third shift coworkers, since there are generally fewer distractions.

Childcare Considerations

The price of childcare is only going up. If your spouse or partner works days, switching to third shift could help you minimize the amount of time your kids spend in a paid childcare arrangement. Of course, it’s important to discuss this possibility with your partner before making a decision.

Third shift isn’t the right choice for every worker, but it does have a lot of benefits that many people overlook. Give the opportunity some serious thought to determine if it makes sense for you.
