4 Skilled Trades that Are Currently in Demand

Though the numbers are improving, unemployment remains high in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. But some sectors never shed many jobs, and some are bouncing back fast.

If you’re looking for a new job, here are 4 skilled trades that are currently in demand.

PV Installers

With the proposed American Jobs Plan working its way through Congress, the United States is ready to invest in clean energy in a big way. Solar energy is one the big keys to a sustainable future, which also means a lot of jobs. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that solar photovoltaic (PV) installers will grow in employment by 51% by 2029.

Wind Turbine Technicians

Wind turbines are another important part of the clean energy revolution. But these machines need regular service and repair, which creates a need for skilled technicians. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this area will rise by a stunning 61% by 2029.

Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters

Plumbers and pipefitters are always in demand, with a Bureau of Labor Statistics projected growth in employment of 4% by 2029. However, part of the American Jobs Plan calls for replacing 100% of the lead pipes in the United States. Should this make it into law, there will be an immense need for people to perform this work.

The construction industry has been doing quite well right through the pandemic, and it shows no sign of slowing. Electricians are always needed to install and repair the wiring in both residential and commercial buildings. In addition, the American Jobs Plan calls for modernizing the entire electric grid. This could mean a job growth rate far higher than the 8% by 2029 currently projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Covid-19 pandemic upended life as we know it, and previous projections may no longer be entirely accurate. But the United States is now setting its sights on tackling infrastructure while simultaneously moving to a greener future. This creates strong opportunities for some skilled trades that are likely to be in very high demand over the next decade.
