The Great Resignation has more workers leaving their jobs than ever before. But while some of them are leaving the workforce altogether, most are simply looking for what they see as a better deal. You can help reduce your own losses with some simple but effective employee retention strategies.
Here is How To Keep Your Employees From Leaving
Revisit Your Pay Structure
The Great Resignation isn’t solely, or even primarily, about money. But if you’re not paying fairly, you’re sending a signal that you don’t respect your employees. Take some time to look at your entire pay structure. Are new hires being paid according to current industry standards? Are long-term employees receiving generous raises? Do you offer stock options, bonuses, or other additional compensation? Making sure your pay structure is competitive will help with employee retention.
Use Surveys
Employees rarely decide to quit on a whim. Most of the time, they’ve been unhappy for a while before something pushes them over the edge. Use employee retention surveys to identify dissatisfaction while you still have time to correct it. Sample questions might include:
- Do you generally enjoy working here?
- Would see yourself working here five years from now?
- Is your supervisor is fair and supportive?
- Do you have friends here?
- Does your voice matter?
- Do you have any suggestions to improve your work life?
It’s best to keep your surveys anonymous. If you want to hold more detailed focus groups, offer the opportunity to opt-in.
Focus on Diversity and Inclusivity
Now more than ever, people want to work in environments that they view as diverse and inclusive. Make sure you have a broad range of representation at every level of the company. Consider organizing a diversity and inclusivity council, made up of both front-line workers and executives, to come up with ways to be more inclusive. Also, consider revising policies such as your dress code with an eye toward ensuring that natural looks are not deemed unprofessional.
Create Leaders, Not Managers
Toxic managers have no place in the modern workforce. Train your supervisors to be mindful, compassionate, and competent. Help them learn to lead by example and to foster communication. Great leaders inspire rather than command and help everyone unify around a shared vision.
Improve Your Team Building
Workers spend large amounts of time together, and they need to know that they can rely on each other. Host regular onsite and offsite team-building activities that help them build bonds. Examples include escape rooms, scavenger hunts, and thought exercises.
