If you’re looking for a new job in 2023, now is a great time to start preparing for interviews. A lot has changed in the past few years, and your interview may be either in person or through videoconferencing. But the best practices remain the same, regardless of the method of the interview. Here are some interviewing tips to keep in mind.
Are You Prepared For Your Next Interview?
Dress to Impress
You don’t need to buy a new wardrobe, but the general rule is to dress one level up from how you would dress every day on the job. So if the role calls for business casual, you might wear a jacket and tie or a nice skirt and blouse. If the job allows jeans or shorts, opt for khakis and a button-down or polo shirt. Looking your best shows that you’re serious while also boosting your confidence.
Practice the STAR Method
This is a method for answering interview questions that keeps your answers succinct and focused. STAR stands for:
- Situation: Set the stage with just a handful of details.
- Task: Explain what was going on at the time.
- Action: Describe the specific steps you took.
- Result: Share what you actually achieved as a result of your actions.
Explain Your Transferrable Skills
If you’re going for a job in a new industry or a new field, the interviewer will want to know how your background has prepared you for the role. One of the best ways to explain this is to focus on your transferrable skills. Soft skills such as leadership, organization, and time management can transfer into virtually any role.
Stay Relaxed But Professional
The goal is to build rapport with your interviewer, so relax and be yourself. But don’t slip into unprofessionalism. Strike a balance by utilizing eye contact, a confident handshake, and active listening skills, while still using polite and professional language. Be enthusiastic but not over-the-top.
Reiterate Your Interest
As the interview comes to a close, let the interviewer know that you are still interested. Recap why you believe you’re the right fit and inquire about the next steps. This ends things on a high note while alleviating any concerns about whether or not you still want the job.
Send Your Thanks
Follow up with a nice note thanking the interviewer for their time. You have 24 hours to send an email or about a week to send a handwritten note. Don’t gush, just express your genuine thanks.
