Assess Your Goals and Values
Why do you want to work anywhere? If you’re like most people, the simple answer might be earning money. But beyond that, you probably want to work somewhere that fits with your personal values and career goals. Take some time to figure out what type of work culture you want, what you would like to learn on the job, and what type of environment makes you feel valued.
Pay Attention to the Job Description
What stood out to you when you were searching for job postings? What made you decide to answer that particular ad? Go back through the job description and note what you’re most excited about.
Visit the Company Website and Social Media
Now it’s time to learn more about the company. Read up on its history. Learn who the major players are. Read a few blog entries. See what types of posts are on the official social media accounts. Look for information that is relevant to your values and goals.
Make a List
Take detailed notes on what you’ve discovered. Create a list of your personal values and match up the ways in which the position or the company as a whole seems to fit. Then do the same with your career objectives. The goal is to be able to talk specifically about who you are and what you want, and how that meshes with the company. Remember, you want to talk about both how the organization meets your needs and how you can meet their needs.
